Living the urban periphery

Living the Urban Periphery explores the vibrant and evolving edges of cities, focusing particularly on African urban peripheries. Despite their significant transformations, these areas are under-researched, with scant attention given to the patterns of building, growth, investment, and decline that define them, as well as the lived experiences of their inhabitants.

This co-authored monograph presents findings from an extensive comparative study involving Ethiopia and South Africa, complemented by insights from a related study on Ghana. It delves into the dual themes of living in these dynamically transforming urban environments and understanding the driving forces behind their evolution.

By conceptualising and applying five 'logics of periphery', this work provides unique, contextually-informed perspectives on the fundamental processes shaping urban peripheries. It also highlights the diverse manifestations of these processes in contemporary Africa for those living on the peripheries.
